ORIGINAL AUDUBON IMPERIAL QUADRUPEDS

Toward the end of his life, Audubon endeavored to depict all the known species of North American mammals.  These were published in three sets by J. Bowen between 1845 and 1848.  Known in the trade as the Imperials, his detailed images measured 22 x 28 inches untrimmed.

Plate 85: Jumping Mouse:
As shown in the Pictures. 21 7/8" X 27 6/8"  Light soiling outside the image area. A 2 1/2" tear on the left edge with a second 2" tear joining just barely outside the image area along with a water stain (see close-up), three 1/2" tears (one on left edge and two on right edge). All the tears and the stain can be repaired easily by a qualified conservationist. A nice image with a beautiful farm scene. Plate 138  Pine Marten   Original hand-colored stone lithograph as shown in the Picture. The dimensions are  27 1/8" X 21 1/2". Image area in excellent condition with bright original colors. Binding edge at the top; light coloration and minor handling creases along the remaining three edges (see Pic).   About Pine Marten, Audubon wrote "Let us take a share of  the cunning and sneaking character of the fox, as much of the wide-awake and cautious habits of the weasel, a similar proportion of the voracity of the mink, and add thereto some of the climbing propensities of the raccoon, and we have a tolerable idea of the attributes of the little prowler".  J. W. Audubon painted this  image showing the male (top) cozying up to the female to share her hard-earned dinner.   $3985
