ALIVE AND MOVING!  John James Audubon wrote, "...nothing, after all, could ever answer my enthusiastic desires to represent nature, except to copy her in her own way, alive and moving!"  True to his desire, and unlike scientific illustrations of his day, Audubon’s compositions were ‘alive and moving’ in natural settings, and life size as well. However, to this Audubon adds, "Merely to say, that each of my illustrations is of the size of nature, were too vague ... Not only is every object, as a whole, of the natural size, but also every portion of each object. The compass aided me in its delineation, regulated and corrected each part, ... The bill, the feet, the legs, the claws, the very feathers as they project one beyond another, have been accurately measured." John James Audubon. Ornithological Biography, Volume 1

John Gould (1804-1881), probably the most famous British Ornithologist and a contemporary of America’s own John James Audubon had truly earned the nickname "the Bird man" with his prolific publication of as many as 2999 paintings of Birds!

A taxidermist initially by profession, he traveled around the world, collected bird skins from different countries and published  "The Birds of Great Britain", "The Birds of Asia", "The Birds of Europe", "The Birds of Australia", "The Birds of New Guinea", 'A Monograph of the Trochilidae or Family of Humming-Birds',  A Monograph of Ramphastidae or Family of Toucans", "A Monograph of the Trogonidae or family of Trogons", and "A Century of Birds hitherto unfigured from the Himalaya Mountains". His Birds were printed as hand-colored stone lithographs from his original paintings.

Most of the initial drawings on the original paintings were made by John Gould himself with subsequent background detail fill-in and hand-coloring work done by some of the most talented artists that he employed.  These artists included his wife Elizabeth, Henry Richter, Edward Lear, Richard Sharpe, and William Hart among others. Some of these artists are represented below.

Among the published works of John Gould, his delicate renderings of the delightful Hummingbirds proved to be some of the most sought after. To capture the beautiful iridescence naturally exhibited by some of these birds in Nature, Gould utilized gold or silver leaf in the paint followed by gum arabic highlights, with dramatic results. A couple of examples of these iridescent Hummingbird lithographs by Gould are shown below. During the mid-19th Century, it was only the very affluent part of the society that could afford to subscribe to these very colorful lithographs that eventually ended up in bound volumes.

These "hand-painted stone lithographs" from the mid-19th Century have been appreciating in value rather dramatically not only because of the incredible beauty of the birds and the superb workmanship of the artists, but also because of the increasing scarcity of these originals available to purchase. Here is your opportunity to own an original hand-colored Gould for a very reasonable price.

To purchase, or if you have any questions, please email us - audubonart@aol.com

Note: We receive many questions from our visitors regarding the value of their Gould print.  It is first necessary to determine if your print is an original or a reproduction.  The presence of script at the lower edge of the image attributing the print to Gould does not verify originality.  Many same-size reproductions were done in the 1940's which today appear to be just as old as the originals, and have all the supporting script.  The paper of these reproductions, however, has the feel of light construction paper, not the firmer paper of the originals.  It is generally yellowing a bit, whereas the originals will generally have a consistent off-white appearance.  One should also take a magnifying glass and examine any colored area for the presence of small dots in a geometric pattern, not unlike magnified newsprint.  These dots would indicate a reproduction.  Smooth washes of color would indicate hand-coloring, such as in the originals.  But be aware that we have seen some of the 1940 reproductions that were later enhanced with watercolor, in order to pass them off as originals.  So we would advise that you take your print into an art gallery or a university library, and ask for their assistance in determining the validity of your print. Most Gould originals are valued at a few hundred dollars each.
