What size were Audubon originals?
The original Double Elephant edition - which depicted
birds the same size as life - was necessarily very large, about 29 x 39
inches. In contrast, when Audubon reproduced these in the Royal Octavo
size, these prints were about 7 x 10 inches. Pictured together here is
an original double elephant Band-tailed Pigeon, the same size as life, along
with the smaller reproduction in the Royal Octavo size.

Later, Audubon produced the Imperial
sized Quadrupeds or mammals. These measured 22 x 28 inches.
Following this he produced the smaller Royal Octavo edition of the same
quadrupeds, again measuring about 7 x 10 inches. Please note their
relative sizes in the picture below.
