This page is for collectors of actual original Audubon/Havell edition etchings. Havells are the most sought after of all of Audubon's work. Extremely rare, there were only about 200 of each image ever produced. The value increases year by year, as most of these are found only in museums today. 4: Purple Finch A rather beautiful Hand-colored engraving by W. H. Lizars. Sheet dimensions 37 1/16" X 24 7/16" with the watermark "J. Whatman/ Turkey Mill /1827". Original hand coloring. Sheet backed by Japan Rice paper. Very faint mat burn, a difficult to notice 4" long paper imperfection in the white area within the plate mark (see detail Pic), some foxing along the top edge, and two hinge tapes verso top edge. These are easily treated by a conservationist. Audubon painted these colorful birds perched on a Tamarack Tree near the Great Lakes area around 1824 (Low). Price: $3275. |

Plate 51: Red-tailed
Hawk (For NYC dwellers - Pale Male) Dimensions 26 x 36 inches with the entire watermark visible - J WHATMAN, TURKEY MILL, 1834 Small nicks around edges and two 1 1/2 inch tears, repaired, at top of print. Part and plate number at top is trimmed away. Filled with the drama of life, this print has been fully (and beautifully) restored by the Philadelphia Print Shop, with old backing removed. (Thus, the watermark is now visible) Coloring is outstanding and bold. Similar plate sold for $16,730 plus buyer's premium at Christies in 2004, with dealers now asking 21,000 to 25,000. Plate 49 (XLIX): Blue-green Warbler Original Havell Edition hand-colored copper-plate engraving with etching and aquatint. This print has been moderately trimmed to a dimension of about 18-1/2” X 26”. The deep prominent plate mark (image matrix) is entirely intact and measures about 12-1/4” X 19-1/4”. There are wide margins around the plate mark for easy framing. No Whatman watermark can be seen. However, this print is guaranteed to be an original Audubon Havell Edition print. This print is in overall excellent condition. There is a professionally repaired 1-1/2” tear at the left margin, which does NOT come close to the plate mark. There are 3 tiny scattered fox marks, and a tiny black ink mark near the lower right corner of the plate mark. The coloring is excellent (see close-up photo). $1400.00. Dimensions 28 3/8" X 21 1/2" with the "J. Whatman"
watermark (the year 1827 trimmed). Small nicks and tears along the
edges (three one inch tears along the left edge and two on the top edge
- - all well outside the Platemark). Some tears expertly
repaired. All these can be easily covered with matting. The image area
is exceptionally clean with bright original colors on the birds and the
background. Birds collected by Audubon in
1828 in Newfoundland (Low). An early plate, engraved
by W. H. Lizars and printed and colored by Robert Havell. $1,700.

Plate 85: Yellow Throat
Warbler A beautiful Hand-colored engraving with aquatint and etching by R. Havell, Jr. Full sheet dimensions 36" X 25 7/16" with the "J. Whatman 1830" watermark. Audubon painted this male bird perched on the branch of a Chinquapin Tree in 1821 at the Oakley Plantation, Louisiana (Low). The entire image area enclosed by the Platemark is in Excellent condition with beautiful original colors (see Pics). A faint unobtrusive five inch flaw in the paper (like a ridge) outside the plate mark, on the left side (see Pic). Outside the plate mark area the following conditions are noted (see Pics): occasional waviness, very faint barely noticeable coloration from previous matting, a light handling crease lower right, and faint stains in lower corner areas. A faint unobtrusive fox mark in the upper left, to the right side of No.24. Slight browning along the edges. Binding marks along the left edge. sided Flycatcher A beautiful Hand-colored engraving with aquatint and etching by Robert Havell. Full Sheet Dimensions 38" X 25 1/16" with "J . Whatman / Turkey Mill / 1833" watermark. Normal age toning, some very faint discoloration from previous matting (see Pic), two 1" tears at the top edge and a 1" tear right edge, unobtrusive creases in the middle (see Pics), binding marks left edge, and occasional foxing. They are all easily repaired by an art conservationist. The image with nice details and colors shows the Male and Female birds on a Balsam Fir. Plate 370: American Water Ouzel :Aquatint engraving by Robert Havell. Sheet Dimensions 38 15/16" X 25 7/8" with the watermark " J. Whatman 1837". The image area is in Excellent Condition, with a beautiful American West background scenery, and very sharp details and bright colors on the birds and on the forground scenery with the water falls. This plate came from a bound volume, and there is a very very faint offset image of the adjoining plate (Cock of the Plains) barely visible outside the image area of the Water Ouzel (see the Pic).
