Plate 51: Red-tailed Hawk   (For NYC dwellers - Pale Male)

Dimensions 26 x 36 inches with the entire watermark visible - J WHATMAN, TURKEY MILL, 1834  Small nicks around edges and two 1 1/2 inch tears, repaired, at top of print. Part and plate number at top is trimmed away.  Filled with the drama of life, this print has been fully (and beautifully) restored by the Philadelphia Print Shop, with old backing removed.  (Thus, the watermark is now visible)  Coloring is outstanding and bold. Similar plate sold for $16,730 plus buyer's premium at Christies in 2004, with dealers now asking 21,000 to 25,000.  This print has been in the hands of a Pennsylvania family for many decades.  $19,000.  Available through the New York Times Cultural Mall.
