ALIVE AND MOVING! John
James Audubon wrote,
"...nothing,
after all, could ever answer my enthusiastic desires to represent nature,
except to copy her in her own way, alive and moving!"
True to his desire, and unlike
scientific illustrations of his day, Audubon’s compositions were ‘alive and
moving’ in natural settings, and life size as well. However, to this
Audubon adds,
"Merely to say, that each of my illustrations is
of the size of nature, were too vague ... Not only is every object, as a
whole, of the natural size, but also every portion of each object. The
compass aided me in its delineation, regulated and corrected each part, ...
The bill, the feet, the legs, the claws, the very feathers as they project
one beyond another, have been accurately measured."

Welcome! We invite you to invest in
the past with the historically accurate, absolutely precise, limited edition
re-creations of John James Audubon's antique Birds of America, 1827-1838.
Princetons are unique,
being the world's only
direct-camera double elephant facsimile re-creations.
Their production required the purchase of actual originals. Please note that
Princetons are true
lithograph fine art prints. They are neither glossy posters nor
today's increasingly common giclee print on demand computer print-outs which
lose their value as each new edition arrives on the scene. Princetons
were produced by the late David
Johnson, a collector of superb Audubon
originals who also founded the days paramount printing company in the
country - Princeton Polychrome
Press. This company, now sold,
achieved an enviable nationwide reputation by
reproducing fine art prints for the National Gallery of Art, National
Portrait Gallery, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Metropolitan Museum
of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Detroit Institute of
Arts. The finest reproductions of Picasso and Andrew Wythe that you
occasionally see on the market today were produced by Princeton. At
the zenith of his career and using exceptional artistic resources, David
Johnson re-created the actual originals from his world renowned personal
collection. Using the direct-camera technique that he pioneered,
along with oversized Kodak film with its infinite retention of detail, he
produced these award winning one-of-a-kind re-creations.
More than
just a fine work of art,
award-winning Princetons
are the world's only
direct-camera Audubon facsimiles.
Princetons are
viewed the finest of all Audubon prints.
You may purchase these
stunning works
right here from this website.
We have also authorized sales from the New-York Historical Society, from
the Audubon Gallery in Key West, from minniesland.com, from rare-prints.com,
and from the
New York Times.
We
guarantee your satisfaction. Limited
edition Princetons are expensive, as we purchased the actual originals in
order to re-create them.
Chris Lane,
owner of Philadelphia Print Shop and guest appraiser on PBS
Antiques Roadshow
wrote, "Of all the Audubon reproductions, Princetons come the closest
in appearance and quality to the originals." Audubon print expert
Ron Flynn
states, "The colors are bright, fresh and natural looking, and the
amount of detail seen in the images is extraordinary.
Princeton Audubons stand above
all other modern offset facsimile reproductions"

Exceptional fine art!
"The
Princeton Collection reproductions of Audubon's birds offer an incredible
value. The quality of color, definition and paper are fantastic and far
beyond expectations."-
Rare-Prints.com owner Ben Frishman
Definition is
sharpness and contrast between contiguous parts of the artwork. The reason
Princeton facsimile definition is far beyond expectation is our unique
capture process. The actual originals were purchased and carefully
photographed by a huge, wall-mounted camera using film the same size as the
print! This is a one to one capture of detail, the absolute highest
standard. (Amsterdams and Abbevilles are actually not reproductions of
originals, but reproductions of small photographs of originals. Modern
ink-jet or Giclee editions are products of PhotoShop.) Then this highly
detailed image was transferred to the mechanical printing plates, and
finally pressed into archival-quality paper. Furthermore, we printed on a
300 line, meaning 300 tiny dots of ink would fit along a one inch line. No
other Audubon facsimiles have ever been produced using this method.

White Pelican, Princeton Audubon Edition, $750

The historically accurate
Princeton Audubon double elephant prints are more than mere reproductions.
They are in fact the world’s only direct-camera, first-generation Audubon
re-creations. ‘Direct-camera’ refers to the process utilized to first
capture images of the original art. Princeton Audubon Limited actually
purchased the antique originals, brought them into its printing plant, and
directly transferred the huge original image onto special Kodak film that
was the same size as the artwork. This one to one capture,
with no reduction or enlargement, retains the striking detail and
amazing color of Audubon’s originals. Being just one step
away
from the originals, they are properly termed first-generation
re-creations. Audubon author and print collector Bill Steiner calls
Princetons,
“Simply the finest Audubon facsimiles ever produced.” |

DRAWN FROM NATURE. Audubon prints are unique, as they were the first bird illustrations
made available to the public that were drawn in realistic settings, or
as is engraved into the lower left of each copperplate, "Drawn from
Nature." Audubon himself put it this way... "Having studied drawing for a short
while in my youth under good masters, I felt a great desire to make
choice of a style more particularly adapted to the imitation of feathers
than the drawings in water colours that I had been in the habit of
seeing, and moreover, to complete a collection not only valuable to the
scientific class, but pleasing to every person, by adopting a different
course of representation from the mere profile-like cut figures, given
usually in works of that kind." John James Audubon Audubon dramatically accomplished this goal
through sheer strength of character. Often these images reflected the
drama of life as well. Thus, Audubon prints are not mere
illustrations, but dramatic art that speaks to you through the ages. It is
indeed, art from calmer times. Audubon himself usually
composed the birds in the wild, while he used a number of
talented assistants to later add the background and flora. The
Pinnated Grous is an exception, as Audubon composed all three elements.
Here is a historic facsimile of the Pinnated
Grous. Contributing to the appeal of Audubon prints is
their life size aspect. For example, when you purchase a double elephant
facsimile of the
American Flamingo, the bird is
the same size as in life. (Interestingly, the actual American
Flamingo which was the subject of this composition was obtained from the
shores of Cuba.) But regarding the life-size aspect, Audubon adds... "Merely to say, that
each of my illustrations is of the size of nature, were too vague ...
Not only is every object, as a whole, of the natural size, but also
every portion of each object. The compass aided me in its delineation,
regulated and corrected each part, ... The bill, the feet, the legs, the
claws, the very feathers as they project one beyond another, have been
accurately measured." John James Audubon. Ornithological Biography,
Volume 1 Therefore, the prints of John James Audubon are something more
than simple illustrations, and their appeal transcends art and time.

"Princeton has faithfully reproduced the N-YHS
original engravings in a collector's edition of stunning quality and
brilliant color."
Louise Mirrer, Director of the New-York Historical Society
We
have also begun releasing our newest Audubon edition, the extremely
high-quality Princeton Essex Elephant Edition. This is an edition for
serious collectors of Audubon prints, and for collectors of fine art.
Reduced in size to an average 63% of the originals, these approximate the
size Audubon used for his Imperial Quadrupeds on elephant sized paper. The
paper is coated Essex 110#, an absolutely beautiful paper to the sight and
touch. Being coated, the ink 'stands up' resulting in stunning color and
brightness.
Above left
is the Louisiana Heron, and below is the Roseate Spoonbill. Both
measure 19 x 23 inches on absolutely exquisite Essex paper, which is
produced in America's oldest continuously operated paper mill in New
Hampshire. We had these printed at the internationally recognized
Toppan Printing Company. This is the same company which produced the
Abbeville series back in 1985.
Both sell
for $150.
|
But just
as Audubon felt that describing his prints simply as the 'size of
nature' was too vague, so also Princetons are more than just facsimiles.
Why? Our purchase of the finest originals, the use of the
direct-camera process, the choice and development of special inks, the
finest paper available, and the skill of master printers, makes this the
finest Audubon series ever produced. It 'eclipses' all others. After
all, these were printed by not only a master printer, but by one of the
world's foremost Audubon print collectors. It only stands to reason that
the Princeton Audubon Collection is also unique. So whether you purchase these prints as investments
or for their exquisite beauty, you can be certain that you have the finest
value in Audubon prints.

|
Original Octavo Birds
We have
a fine selection of popular and hard to find examples of
Audubon's 'Miniatures' - the Octavos. These measure
about 7 x 10 inches. On many, such as the
Yellow-crowned Night Heron shown here which sells for
$1,800, you still see the original binding holes. This heron
is a first edition, the most sought-after grouping of
Audubon's octavo prints.

NEWS: University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill adds Princeton Audubon Prints to its collection.
UNC, through its fine Wilson Library, has recently acquired a full
collection of Princeton prints. There are many museums and
institutions that hold Princetons, since Princetons are far beyond mere
reproductions. These are living, historic documents in that they
are absolutely exact re-creations of actual Audubon originals.
