Step three ...
Now the engraver would ink the copperplate with black
ink, and press dampened sheets of paper onto the copperplate
in a printing press. The great pressure
would allow the dampened paper to enter into the small etchings where it
absorbed the ink. Since the copperplate
was smaller than the paper, in most cases, its edges would leave a plate impression around the
image. Here is what the image would look like after being pulled off the
plate. Note that the image is now properly oriented, and ready to be colored in.
