Step two ...

Next, Audubon brought the watercolor to his engraver in London.  The engraver etched a reverse pattern of the image into a polished copperplate.  These copperplates were the largest available at the time, about 29 x 40 inches.  Here is what the copperplate for the Little Blue Heron looks like.  Notice that the image is reversed.
