Toucan (Ramphastos Swainsonii): Lithograph-1 SOLD
Original
hand-colored stone lithograph from John Gould's "A
monograph of the Ramphastidae or family of Toucans"
(1833-1835). Dimensions about 21 7/8" X 14 1/4". "J. E. Gould"
signature at the base of the tree branch. The Birds, leaves, and
branches are in excellent condition with the original bright colors
and wonderful gum arabic highlights. The litho is attached (tacky
glued) to the matte (see photo), so the credits at the bottom lower
left "Drawn from Nature & On Stone by J & E Gould" and lower right:
"Printed by C. Hullmandel" are just below the matte. Slight waviness
in the paper, not seen when framed. Backside of the print has some
coloration from previous matting, but none showing through in the
front. Very rare ••• one of only 250 prints published by Gould. Price
$1000 or best offer.
